After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump has made an important claim. According to Trump, India had offered zero tariff to the US, but now this opportunity is over. This statement not only puts a question mark on India-US relations, but it is also being seen in the context of India’s growing relations with Russia.
The US President and his senior officials are constantly making controversial and unsubstantiated claims regarding India. In this sequence, Trump made another statement on social media on Monday. He said that India has now proposed to reduce the tariff to zero, but this is very late.
This statement came at a time when just a few hours ago Prime Minister Modi had met Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump alleges that trade with India has been a “one-sided disaster” and due to high tariffs, America is not able to sell its products in the Indian market.
“India sells us a huge amount of goods and we are a major customer for them, but we export relatively little to them. This relationship has been one-sided for decades. The reason is that India has imposed extremely high tariffs on us, more than any other country. As a result, American businesses are unable to sell their products in India, making this a one-sided disaster,” Trump wrote.
