ICMR said on Saturday that India has successfully isolated and cultivated the new coronavirus strain that causes Covid-19. ICMR added that no other nation has yet recorded active isolation and culture of the United Kingdom-the SARS-CoV-2 version.
In a tweet posted by ICMR, the institution said, “SARS-CoV-2, a virus that triggers COVID-19, has been monitored through a national network of ICMR laboratories since the early days of the outbreak in India. The UK-virus variant, with all signature modifications, is now successfully isolated and cultured at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) from clinical specimens obtained from the UK-returnees.
A few weeks earlier, it was reported that the latest, more communicable strain of the Covid-19 virus is on the verge of infection in the United Kingdom. Experts believe that it is more communicable than other SARS-CoV-2 variants. As a precautionary measure, India suspended all flights from the United Kingdom to India from 21 December to 31 December, which was eventually extended on 7 January, 20 January. Viral culture is a laboratory procedure in which cells are grown under controlled conditions, normally outside their natural habitat.
ICMR has indicated that Vero cell lines have been used by ICMR-NIV scientists to cultivate the UK-virus variant.
The central government and state governments are on high alert due to the latest strain and have been focusing on monitoring, checking and isolating UK patients since the last week of November. Earlier, it was confirmed that some of the flyers were untraceable due to incorrect names, old passport addresses, incorrect contact details, and cell phones were turned off.
