Ten new born infants were killed by fire in the Maharashtra Hospital in the early hours of Saturday. According to the doctors, a fire broke out at around 2 a.m. in the Special Newborn Care Unit of Bhandara District Hospital.
There were about 17 infants in the unit when the ward caught fire. The nurse who noticed the fire immediately swung into action to save the babies but unfortunately, only seven of the babies could be saved by the fire department.
The nurse who was on duty first found smoke emanating from the neonatal area of the hospital and raised an alarm to the doctors and other personnel who had entered the hospital in five minutes.
Fire department staff saved seven babies from the unit’s ‘inbound ward,’ but could not save the remaining 10 babies, said the eyewitnesses.
The hospital authorities are trying to figure out as to what caused the fire. There has been speculations that it may have been the result of an electrical short circuit, said the authorities in the hospital
