An indefinite curfew was imposed in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo yesterday and the army has been alerted in view of a rally proposed today to demand the removal of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Police chief Chandana Wickramaratne said curfew has been imposed in Colombo and its suburbs and people have been asked to stay in their homes.
The order was issued in view of thousands of anti-government protesters marching towards the capital to take part in today’s rally. Demonstrators are gathering in Colombo to put pressure on the Rajapaksa regarding the country’s growing economic crisis. Sri Lanka is facing an unprecedented shortage of essential commodities.
Protesters have been staging a sit-in outside his office for several months demanding the resignation of President Rajapaksa.
