Parliament has today passed the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill with the approval of Rajya Sabha. The Upper House passed the bill amid a walkout by the opposition members. The Lok Sabha had passed this bill yesterday. In this bill, there is a provision to give four opportunities every year to the persons who have completed the age of 18 years to enroll their names in the voter list.

Questioning the opposition’s apprehensions about the bill, he said that it has been brought to make electoral rolls transparent and fair. Rijiju said that the Aadhaar card will be used by the returning officer only for the purpose of identification and age.

During the debate, the opposition parties questioned the intent of the bill and the manner in which it was brought in the Upper House. Congress’s Ami Yagnik said that this bill is a violation of the right to privacy of the people and will exploit the people of the deprived sections.

Supporting the bill, BJP’s Sushil Modi alleged that Congress, TMC and Left were opposing the bill to save fake voters.
