Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured that the state will be free from the problem of child marriage by 2026. Mr. Sarma, who is also holding the charge of the Home Department, while replying to a question in the State Legislative Assembly today assured that his government is committed to rid Assam of the evil of child marriage.
He said action against violators will continue and more than 900 charge sheets have been filed recently. Sarma said that a total of 4 thousand 510 persons have been arrested in the state since 2006 in cases of child marriage. He also rejected the allegation of misuse of POCSO Act by the police during the crackdown against child marriage.
Sarma said that important steps are being taken to rehabilitate the victims of child marriage cases and awareness is also being created among people to prevent child marriage.
