Amid reports of violence against minority Hindu community at some places in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has assured that communal harmony will be protected in the country at all costs. In an interview to a news agency, he said that the investigation is on and the culprits will not be spared. On the handling of the situation, the Minister said that hundreds of people have been arrested and four rioters have also been killed in the police action.
He said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed all concerned officials to provide necessary assistance to the riot victims. The Bangladesh government on Monday transferred seven superintendents of police including Feni and Rangpur districts. Chattogram’s Deputy Commissioner of Police has also been transferred.
Minority Hindu community was affected in incidents of communal violence against minority Hindu communities during Durga Puja in Chattogram and Feni, while incidents of violence and loot have been reported in Rangpur on Sunday night.
Police have arrested 42 people in Rangpur district in connection with the violence and attacks on Hindu homes and temples on Sunday following an alleged derogatory post on social media. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse a mob that had attacked houses in Boro Karimpur Majhipada village in Peerganj sub-district of Rangpur district.
