The definitive decision to add a break to the 2024 Games was not to be taken until after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Despite the postponement of the Summer Games in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee continued with its scheduled meeting.
Breakdancing started in the 1970s in the Bronx as a part of hip-hop culture and eventually spread worldwide. At the 2018 Youth Olympics, dancers between the ages of 16-18 competed head-to-head in either men’s, women’s or mixed-team battles.
