Diplomatic Victory: 11 Indian Ships Safely Exit Strait of Hormuz After Talks with Iran; 13 Still in Region

Amidst severe tensions in West Asia and specifically in the Strait of Hormuz, there is a significant sigh of relief for India. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) officially announced today that following intensive diplomatic negotiations with Iran, 11 Indian merchant vessels that were stranded in the region have safely exited. According to a ministry spokesperson, these ships have been provided a safe corridor toward international waters. However, the situation has not fully returned to normal, as the Ministry also clarified that 13 other Indian vessels and their crews remain in the turbulent area. The Indian government is in constant contact with Iranian authorities and other key stakeholders in the region to ensure the safe return of the remaining ships.

This diplomatic success comes at a time when military activity in the Gulf is at its peak due to the US-led ‘Project Freedom.’ India has maintained a ‘mediated’ and ‘balanced’ stance throughout this crisis, which has allowed it the benefit of direct dialogue with Tehran. The MEA confirmed that most of the 11 safely exited ships are oil tankers and raw material carriers, which are vital for India’s energy security. The Ministry also assured that the crew members of the remaining 13 ships are completely safe, and efforts are underway to provide them with necessary supplies and medical assistance. Indian Navy warships remain on high alert in the nearby international waters under ‘Operation Sankalp’ to respond immediately to any emergency.

Experts believe that this ‘soft power’ diplomacy is a testament to India’s growing stature on the global stage. While a direct confrontation exists between the US and Iran, India has utilized its strong bilateral relations to protect its commercial interests. The External Affairs Minister is personally monitoring the situation and has hinted that a positive decision regarding the movement of the remaining ships could be reached within the next 48 to 72 hours. For now, India has advised all its shipping operators to exercise extra caution while passing through the Strait of Hormuz and to remain in constant contact with the Indian Navy’s Information Fusion Centre. The global oil market is also keeping a close watch on these developments, as the safe passage of ships through Hormuz is a positive sign for supply chain stability.
