Government Warning on GLP-1 Drugs: Use Without Doctor’s Supervision Risky

The government has taken a strict stance on GLP-1 drugs, which have rapidly gained popularity for weight loss and diabetes treatment. These drugs regulate insulin and glucagon hormones in the body to balance blood sugar levels and help with weight loss by suppressing appetite. However, the government has warned that using them without a doctor’s supervision could invite serious health risks.

Side effects from misuse can include nausea, dizziness, pancreatitis, kidney problems, and in some cases even a risk of cancer. The concern is that these drugs are now easily available at medical stores, online platforms, and wellness clinics without prescriptions.

In response, the Drug Controller has initiated strict monitoring of the sale and promotion of these drugs. On March 10, 2026, pharmaceutical companies were directed to stop misleading advertisements. Raids were conducted at 49 locations across the country and notices were issued to violators.

The government has made it clear that these drugs should only be taken on the advice of specialists such as endocrinologists, internal medicine doctors, or cardiologists. Experts point out that lifestyle diseases like diabetes and obesity can largely be prevented through a balanced diet and regular exercise.
