The Hon’ble Supreme Court heard a pending petition regarding the living conditions and other information of Rohingya refugees residing in Delhi. On this petition filed by the petitioner for admission of children in government schools, availability of medical facilities and other government benefits, the court asked to provide detailed information about the residence of the refugees, number of houses, their status and certificate of residence within 10 days.
In this case, an organization named Rohingya Human Rights Initiative filed a petition before the Supreme Court and was represented by advocate Colin Gonsalves. It was mentioned that these refugees are cardholders of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). In a previous case related to education, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta confirmed that there would be no discrimination against these refugees in the field of education.
Justice Surya Kant clarified that no one should be discriminated against on the question of right to education and this necessary information is being sought so that the court can assess the actual place of residence of these refugees and their living conditions and accordingly determine effective measures to provide appropriate facilities and support.
