India reported 3,54,531 fresh covid-19 cases on Monday, bringing the total caseload to 17,306,300. India saw the highest single-day increase in deaths, with 2,806 people dying due to a lack of oxygen and a failing health system. The death toll from the lethal infection is 195,116. There are currently over 2.8 million active cases in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged all citizens to get vaccinated and to be cautious, saying the “storm” of infections had shaken India, as the country set a new global record for the most Covid-19 infections in a single day. The United States expressed grave concern about the massive increase in coronavirus cases in India and promised to send aid as soon as possible.

Hospitals in Delhi and throughout the country are turning away patients due to a lack of medical oxygen and beds. Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has extended a week-long lockdown that was set to end on Monday. Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences discovered that one patient can now infect up to nine other people.

The six most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (4,161,676), Kerala (1,322,054), Karnataka (1,247,997), Tamil Nadu (1,037,711), and Andhra Pradesh (997,462), Uttar Pradesh (976,765) and Delhi (956,348).
