US President Donald Trump recently announced that he plans to officially meet his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, in Saudi Arabia. The meeting is noted as Trump’s first formal discussion with Putin during his second term. In addition, he also shared communication with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump appointed a negotiating team that includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA Director John Ratcliffe to encourage talks to end the war.
Trump has also arranged for talks to be held in Munich, where Vice President J.D. Vance and Rubio will lead the US delegation. The president announced the ambition to prevent millions of deaths during the war with Ukraine in these talks. Matching reality, this mission has been presented as a primary step to end the war.
Additionally, Trump offered to help restart the Gaza ceasefire agreement during a visit to Saudi Arabia. Agreeing to the meeting there, Putin also encouraged the possibility of a new and positive relationship between the US and Russia that could break new ground for international security. Also, importantly, the growing closeness between Russia and China remains a concern for the US, which is being taken into special consideration in President Trump’s foreign policy.
