International Labour Day: A glorious story of struggle, sacrifice and changing rights of workers in the modern era

Today, May 1, 2026, the entire world is celebrating International Labour Day. It’s not just a date on the calendar, but a day to honor the countless hands that, through their hard work, laid the foundations of modern civilization. The history of this day is linked to the bloody struggles of the late 19th century, when workers raised their voices against inhumane working conditions and 15-hour shifts. The 1886 Haymarket uprising in Chicago gave the world the slogan “8 hours work, 8 hours rest, and 8 hours recreation .” Today, as we live in a digital and AI-driven age, Labour Day’s relevance has increased, as struggles are no longer limited to physical labor but also encompass mental health, data protection, and the rights of the gig economy.

In the Indian context, May 1st assumes double significance, as it was on this day in 1923 that Labor Day was formally celebrated for the first time in Chennai (then Madras) by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. The Indian workforce is currently undergoing a major transformation. Central and state governments are now using digital platforms to bring millions of workers in the unorganized sector under the ambit of social security. Portals like e-Shram now offer insurance and pension benefits to everyone from street vendors to domestic helpers. However, analysts believe that workers face new challenges in the changing global economy. The increasing influence of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed the nature of jobs, necessitating continuous upskilling and reskilling for workers.

The focus of Labor Day 2026 is “Just Work and Digital Security .” A new category of delivery partners, freelancers, and remote workers has emerged, for whom the definitions of fixed working hours and minimum wages are changing. Experts say that respect should not be limited to wages; workplace safety, gender equality, and respectful treatment are also fundamental human rights. On this day, various labor organizations are organizing rallies and seminars, emphasizing that this segment, which contributes the largest share to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), should have an equal share in the policy-making process. This day reminds us that behind every skyscraper or big technology is the sweat of the laborer, whom society has a collective responsibility to respect.
