Following the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) landslide victory in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, preparations for the formation of the new government are in full swing. According to an official announcement, the swearing-in ceremony of the new government will be held on May 12, 2026, at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be arriving in Assam specifically to witness this historic moment. Additionally, BJP National President JP Nadda and Chief Ministers from several NDA-ruled states are expected to attend. Sources indicate that this ceremony will not only be a political milestone but will also be celebrated as a festival of ‘Ashtalakshmi,’ showcasing the development and cultural pride of the Northeast. The state administration has made elaborate security arrangements, and the city of Guwahati is being decorated for the mega event.
All eyes are on the composition of the new cabinet led by Himanta Biswa Sarma. Political circles suggest that the new ministry may prioritize young faces and ensure fair representation for alliance partners, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and UPPL. Following the massive success in the polls, the BJP high command has reaffirmed its trust in the leadership, and the May 12 event will mark the formal commencement of the ‘Double Engine’ government for a historic third consecutive term. Over 50,000 people are expected to attend, for which massive marquees and LED screens are being installed to allow the public to witness their leaders taking the oath.
The Prime Minister’s visit is also being seen as a significant indicator of Assam’s future growth, as he is expected to announce major infrastructure projects and employment schemes shortly after the ceremony. The Chief Secretary and Director General of Police personally visited the venue to review security and traffic management. Ahead of the swearing-in, a formal meeting of the newly elected MLAs will take place on May 11 to officially elect the leader of the legislative party, followed by a formal claim to form the government presented to the Governor. The ceremony on the afternoon of May 12 will symbolize a new era in Assam’s politics, aiming to accelerate the agenda of peace and development.
