PNG Connections Surge, Government Urges Citizens Not to Panic-Buy LPG

As India tackles the energy challenges arising from the Iran war, the government has launched a multi-pronged response. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, 3.42 lakh new Piped Natural Gas connections have been activated since March 2026, with 3.7 lakh new registrations also recorded. States have been directed to assist in providing new PNG connections to both domestic and commercial consumers.

The government has made a clear appeal to citizens not to panic-buy LPG or make unnecessary fuel purchases. People are being encouraged to book cylinders through digital platforms and to avoid visiting gas agencies without genuine need. The ministry has also promoted the use of alternative energy sources such as PNG, induction cooktops, and electric cooking appliances at home.

Concrete steps have also been taken to boost supply. Refinery production has been increased and the LPG booking interval has been extended from 21 to 25 days in urban areas and to 45 days in rural areas. Alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal have been made available to ease pressure on LPG demand. Coal India and Singareni Collieries have been directed to allocate more coal to states.

Over 5 lakh small 5 kg LPG cylinders have been sold since March 23, with more than 67,000 sold on Thursday alone. Domestic LPG, PNG, hospitals, and educational institutions have been given the highest priority in supply. The Petroleum Secretary held a review meeting with senior officials of all states and Union Territories, directing strict monitoring of hoarding, diversion, and misinformation.
