Ferry service is going to be launched on Delhi’s Yamuna river, which will provide a new travel experience to the local residents. The Delhi government has made significant cooperation with the central government in this regard. The official statement informed that the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with various government agencies, such as the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Delhi Development Authority, and Delhi Jal Board. The aim of this agreement is to develop cruise tourism on the four kilometer stretch of Yamuna River (National Waterway 110), from Sonia Vihar to Jagatpur.

Union Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on the occasion that India’s waterways have undergone a significant transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The launch of eco-friendly cruise tourism on Yamuna marks a concrete step that will promote efficiency and green measures in water transport.

Under this initiative, electric-solar hybrid boats, capable of carrying 20-30 passengers, will operate as river cruises. These boats will have modern facilities like bio-toilets and life jackets for safety of travel. Apart from this, IWAI will install two HDPE jetties, which will enhance the convenience of ferry operations.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the initiative as a new and unique experience that will not only boost tourism but also establish Delhi as a major destination on the global tourism map. Thus, the project will significantly contribute to the economic and environmental development of Delhi.
