KOLKATA: A massive overnight fire at a multi-story hotel in central Kolkata resulted in the deaths of 9 Bangladeshi nationals due to asphyxiation and severe burns, while several others sustained critical injuries. According to witnesses, the blaze spread rapidly through the building, cutting off primary exit routes for guests staying on the upper floors. Emergency response units, including multiple fire engines and disaster management personnel, were deployed to the location.

Rescue teams worked for several hours using hydraulic ladders and breaking window panes to evacuate dozens of individuals trapped inside. The injured were transported to nearby state medical facilities, where several remain in critical condition. Preliminary findings point to a suspected electrical short circuit, while investigators are examining potential non-compliance with building fire safety standards and locked emergency escape routes.

Administrative authorities ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident, initiating legal proceedings against the hotel management for safety lapses. Officials from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission visited medical centers to oversee victim identification and coordinate repatriation formalities with local authorities.
