The United States has supported India’s bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council and also backed discussions on reforming the Security Council. Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said yesterday that the U.S. is prepared to draft a proposal for a General Assembly vote and potentially work with other countries to amend the United Nations Charter.

The U.S. has supported India, Japan, and Germany for permanent seats in the Security Council. Some countries have rejected the reform process, but the U.S.’s backing has brought new hope for progress.

Experts believe that if India gains veto power, it could significantly hinder not only Pakistan’s terrorist activities but also the support it receives from China. China and Pakistan are always concerned that if India gets a permanent seat in the UNSC, it could call for a Security Council meeting anytime and even bring forward proposals on certain issues, which would then be obligatory for other countries to consider. It is noteworthy that whenever India’s bid for a permanent seat advances, China tends to obstruct the process.
