U.S. President Donald Trump has stunned the international community by abruptly canceling a proposed peace talk with Iran that was set to take place in Islamabad, Pakistan. Trump halted his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, from traveling to Pakistan on Saturday, where they were scheduled to discuss sensitive issues such as a ceasefire and nuclear programs with Iranian representatives. Trump shared news of this major decision on his social media platform, ‘Truth Social,’ explicitly stating that negotiating with Iran at this time is a “waste of time.” He argued that flying 18 hours for a meeting only to return without a concrete result was not logical.
The U.S. President cited “massive infighting and confusion” within the Iranian leadership as the primary reason for refusing direct talks. He claimed that there is currently an intense power struggle within the Iranian government and security establishments, asserting that no one truly knows who is in charge. Trump mocked the situation, writing that the leadership is so confused they don’t even know who the boss is. He believes it is impossible to reach a serious agreement with such an unstable leadership. He also reiterated that the U.S. currently “holds all the cards” and that Iran’s position is significantly weakened, meaning Washington does not need to show any urgency.
Interestingly, within ten minutes of canceling the trip, Trump claimed to have received a “better proposal” from Iran. Speaking to reporters, he mentioned that the previous document sent by Tehran was unsatisfactory, but as soon as the visit was canceled, they sent a new document that more clearly showed their commitment to not developing nuclear weapons. Trump made it clear that if the Iranian leadership is truly serious, they should call him directly instead of using mediators. This diplomatic blow has also hampered Pakistan’s efforts to act as a bridge between the U.S. and Iran. For now, economic and military pressure under ‘Operation Epic Fury’ remains in place as the world waits to see if Iran will accept Trump’s challenge for direct dialogue.
