Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal has issued a notice to the Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid. In this notice, women and girls in Jama Masjid have been asked to give reasons for restricting entry without a male companion.
A notice has been put up at the entrance of Delhi’s Jama Masjid. The notice states that the board prohibits women and girls from entering the mosque without a male companion.
Taking cognizance of the ban, Maliwal, in a notice issued today, said that restricting women from freely entering the mosque and practicing their religious beliefs is totally discriminatory. This is a reprehensible action in place of religious faith. Religious places should be free from gender discrimination and open to all. He said that such an order is completely against the basic spirit of women and the Constitution of India. Ms. Maliwal has sought an answer in the matter by next Monday.
