Firing on Two Indian-Flagged Ships in the Strait of Hormuz; India Issues Strong Message to Iran

Concerns have spiked in the maritime trade world following reports of firing on two Indian-flagged commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessels, ‘MV Sagar Ratna’ and ‘MV Neelkanth,’ were reportedly targeted by unidentified attackers using small arms during their routine passage through the world’s most critical oil transit route. Fortunately, no Indian crew members were injured, and the ships sustained no critical damage, thanks to the swift implementation of safety protocols by the crew. The incident has nevertheless sparked an immediate diplomatic response from New Delhi.

The Ministry of External Affairs has raised the issue with Iranian authorities through its embassy in Tehran, emphasizing that the safety of Indian sailors and vessels is paramount. India has urged Iran to conduct a high-level investigation and identify the elements trying to disrupt regional trade peace. While Iran has called the incident ‘unfortunate,’ the timing—amidst high tensions in Western Asia—suggests a potential conspiracy to strain the growing Indo-Iranian ties. The Indian Navy has increased its presence and patrols in the region, while the government continues to use diplomatic channels to ensure that such incidents, which threaten energy security, are not repeated.
