Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrived in Colombo from Bangkok last night. Rajapaksa was received at the airport by several ministers of the Sri Lankan government, after which he reached the official residence allotted as the former president amidst tight security.
Gotabaya left the country after anti-government protesters stormed his official residence in Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis ever. He went to Maldives by Air Force plane and from there to Singapore. He officially resigned from Singapore itself. He later went to Thailand for temporary asylum.
After Rajapaksa’s resignation, caretaker President Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected President for the remaining term till November 2024. Sri Lanka is going through the worst economic crisis ever since its independence in 1948, which started due to a huge depletion of foreign exchange reserves. Crisis has been managed.
