United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe will take oath as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka this evening. Wickremesinghe will become the new Prime Minister after the resignation of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Meanwhile, the no-confidence motion against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be discussed in Parliament on May 17. This decision was taken in the meeting of party leaders yesterday.
Peaceful demonstrations continue in Sri Lanka against the severe economic crisis. Since April 9, thousands of protesters have been protesting against the government across the country. The government does not have funds to import important items. The prices of essential commodities are skyrocketing. There is acute shortage in the supply of fuel, medicines and electricity in the country.
