Russia has decided to leave the International Space Center after 2024. The decision was announced yesterday by Yuri Bori Sof, the newly appointed chairman of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos. President Vladimir Putin was also informed about this.

The announcement comes amid rising tensions between Russia and the West over Russia’s military crackdown in Ukraine and several rounds of unprecedented sanctions against it.

Russia and the United States have been working together for the Space Station, established in 1998, in Earth orbit. Yuri Bori Sof also told President Putin that despite the decision, the space program would continue to be a top priority and that Russia would start building its own space station before 2024.
