A week after his high-decibel visit to West Bengal, Union Home Secretary Amit Shah arrived today in the vicinity of Assam, which is also going to the polls in a few months’ time. His two-day visit to the north-east area started with much fanfare as he landed around midnight (December 25-26) at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, where scores of folk artists and hundreds of supporters had created a festival-like atmosphere for him.

Amit Shah’s projects in Guwahati include the distribution of financial grants to 8,000 Namghars (the ancient Vaishnavite monasteries of Assam) under the Assam Darshan programme.

It will also lay the foundation stones for the establishment of “Batadrava Than” as a culture and tourism destination, a new medical college in the state capital, and nine law colleges to be developed across Assam
