The entire world watched India as it goes down in history with Rajya Sabha passing the controversial triple talaq bill by 99-84 vote margin as opposition resistance crumbles today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Parliament had corrected a historical wrong done to Muslim women.

This is an occasion to salute the remarkable courage of those Muslim women who have suffered great wrongs just due to the practice of Triple Talaq.

The abolition of Triple Talaq will contribute to women empowerment and give women the dignity they deserve in our society.

It was a easy passage for the Triple talaq Bill today as atleast 30 MPs were absent for the Rajya Sabha began voting for the controversial Bill. Despite of having dissent voice from NDA allies and Congress, Narendra Modi-led government achieved success to bringing it into daylight. Besides Congress, two NDA allies like JD (U) and AIADMK shown dissent over the bill. The bill was already by Lok SabhPresident Kovind tweeted that a milestone in gender justice.

Passage in the Rajya Sabha of Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill completes Parliament's approval of ban on the inequitable practice of triple talaq. A milestone in the quest for gender justice; a moment of satisfaction for the entire country #PresidentKovind

During the Modi government’s first term, the Triple talaq Bill was effectively stalled. This was the third time the Bill was considered in the Upper House. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 25..

Government put the bill tittled : The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, before Rajya Sabha, for seeking to make the practice of instant triple talaq illegal with up to three years in jail for the husband. Opposing the bill, opposition parties including the Congress, TMC, Samajwadi Party and DMK demanded that the proposed legislation be sent to select committee for further scrutiny. They also moved a motion for the same which was, however, defeated.

During the debate on the bill, Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said the “real motive of triple talaq bill is destruction of families even though bill claims to protect the rights of women.”He stated  that the Bill is for protection of rights on marriage but the real motive is destruction of families.

Moving the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad argued, “The proposed legislation should be not seen through a political prism or vote bank politics. The bill aims at ensuring gender dignity, justice and equality.”
The bill was passed in Lok Sabha on Thursday last week but the biggest challenge for Narendra Modi government was to get it through the upper house of the parliament where the BJP does not have a absolute majority in upper house of the parliamentWhile National spokesperson for BJP, Sambit Patra too lauded the abolition of the Triple talaq practice. .

From Shahbano to Shairabano is not merely a legal journey but a giant leap for womenkind ..upholding their right to decent living, equality & non-discrimination!#TripleTalaq at one go has finally been criminalised, thanks to PM Sh @narendramodi Ji & All those who fought for it!
