Historical move again: Article 370 scrapped and Jammu and Kashmir bifurcated into Union territories

In a historical move, the Modi government on Monday abolished the provisions of Article 370 amidst uproar scenes in the Rajya Sabha from the opposition. The Article 370 gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This was moved and a separate bill to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir. Both Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh will become Union territories. The Bill was introduced and moved by the Home Minister Amit Shah in the House for which he received standing ovation.

This created a massive uproar in the House with the opposition members from the RJD, Congress TMC and others opposing the bill. A few opposition members sat on the floor to protest against the ill. The vice president Venkaiah Naidu ordered them to be removed bodily from the House.
With the Article 370, J&K had its own Constitution thus the laws passed by the Parliament were not applicable to J&K till now.

Thus with the Modi government’s passing of the bill, Jammu and Kashmir no longer have a separate Constitution.

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s introduction of two statutory resolutions, one for the President to issue a notification rendering Article 370dysfunctional, and two, to accept the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill. The Reorganisation Bill’s passing by the President will make Article 370 inoperative.
